SAFETY EVALUATION OF ETHANOL EXTRACT OF FRUIT PEEL Annona squamosa L. BY ACUTE AND SUB-CHRONIC TOXICITY STUDIES IN MICE Abstract: Annona squamosa Linn. (family Annonaceae) is a large evergreen shrub, cultivated in various regions of Vietnam. Many metabolites in A. squamosa L. have shown antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. This study, we investigate the safety of an aqueous extract of fruit peel A. squamosa L. (EaAS) employing acute and subchronic assays of toxicity in Swiss albino mice. The acute toxicity (1000, 3000, 5000, and 7000 mg/kg body weight) and subchronic toxicity (100, 300, 500, and 700 mg/kg body weight) were determined by oral administration and examined daily for 14 and 90 days continuously. Control groups and the satellite group test were analyzed by signs of toxicity, behavioral changes, mortality rate, changes in the body and organ weights, examining hematology, biochemistry, urine analysis, and histopathology. The examinations showed no abnormalities in the test groups compared to the controls. The results indicated that EaAS do not cause acute or subchronic toxicities in mice.
