Summary Renewable hydrogen is a trending development nowadays. The two main routes for its production are water electrolysis and biomass gasification. Biomass gasification is a fully commercialised technology while water electrolysis is still an unmatured technology. In the downstream sector, for their sustainable development and making full use of available infrastructure, renewable hydrogen can be introduced to refineries and petrochemical plants on the basis of their advantages and conditions. For Dung Quat Refinery, Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Complex, and Phu My Fertilizer Plant, renewable hydrogen can be obtained by water electrolysis using wind and/or solar energy. For Ca Mau Fertilizer Plant, biomass can be considered as the potential feedstock for hydrogen production using gasification technology.
